Artist Statement

A principal theme in my current work is the inspiring and dramatic landscapes of lutruwita / Tasmania. I’m drawn to the uniqueness of these environments, and through textured acrylics and mixed media, I aim to capture their essence. My process is about more than representation—it’s about inviting viewers to experience the depth, energy, and emotion of these powerful places.

My work has often been described as dramatic and powerful, harnessing both the raw energy and the subtle beauty of the landscape. I use a variety of materials and tools—brushes, sponges, palette knives, and even everyday or discarded objects—to create richly layered textures that reflect the complexity of my subjects.

As I continue to grow as an artist, I remain open to experimenting with new techniques and materials. This exploration is not just about developing my practice; it’s also a reflection of my personal journey and a way to connect with others who seek meaning and connection through creativity.

Denise Cox Bio

Denise’s creative journey began in the most natural way—at just 10 years old, when she was gifted her first set of oil paints and a canvas pad. What started as a simple spark quickly grew into something deeper. Through her high school years, she thrived in art, gradually shaping her own unique style through curiosity, experimentation, and a genuine love for the process.

Although life eventually led her down a different path, art never truly left her. In 2024, after a 12-year break, Denise returned to the canvas—and with it, rediscovered a powerful sense of balance and wellbeing. Reconnecting with painting became more than a creative outlet; it became a meaningful way to support her mental health and reconnect with herself.

Largely self-taught, Denise continues to learn in an organic and intuitive way, exploring new techniques, materials, and ideas as she goes. After a fulfilling 34-year career in the sport and events industry, she’s now embracing painting on a part-time basis, allowing creativity to take a more central role in her life.

Now based in beautiful lutruwita / Tasmania, Denise feels deeply inspired by the landscapes around her and the places she’s explored. Her work reflects that connection—calm, expressive, and grounded in a sense of place and personal journey.
