Artist Statement

A principal theme in my current work is the inspiring and dramatic landscapes of lutruwita / Tasmania. I’m drawn to the uniqueness of these environments, and through textured acrylics and mixed media, I aim to capture their essence. My process is about more than representation—it’s about inviting viewers to experience the depth, energy, and emotion of these powerful places.

My work has often been described as dramatic and powerful, harnessing both the raw energy and the subtle beauty of the landscape. I use a variety of materials and tools—brushes, sponges, palette knives, and even everyday or discarded objects—to create richly layered textures that reflect the complexity of my subjects.

As I continue to grow as an artist, I remain open to experimenting with new techniques and materials. This exploration is not just about developing my practice; it’s also a reflection of my personal journey and a way to connect with others who seek meaning and connection through creativity.

Artist Bio

Based in lutruwita / Tasmania, Denise Cox is an Artist drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscapes and places she has experienced. Creating mainly in acrylic paints, pen and ink, her work reflects this connection—calm, expressive, and grounded in a strong sense of place and personal narrative.

Denise's creative journey began at the age of ten, when she received her first set of oil paints. What started as curiosity quickly grew into a lasting passion, nurtured through her school years as she developed a personal style grounded in experimentation, intuition, and a deep appreciation for process.

After a 12-year hiatus, Denise returned to painting in 2024, marking a significant turning point in both her creative and personal life. Reconnecting with art has provided a strong sense of balance and wellbeing, becoming a meaningful way to support her mental health and reconnect with herself.

Largely self-taught, Denise approaches her practice with an organic and intuitive sensibility, continually exploring new techniques and materials. With work regularly commissioned for private collections, she is placing greater focus on her creative practice and its role in her life.

In 2025 Denise participated in her first exhibition, Creative George Town, with fellow artist Michelle Lennard. She is now a regular participant in group exhibitions and has attended the 2025 and 2026 Bob Brown Foundation’s Art for Takayna artist residency and was a participant in 2026 in the Foundation’s Art for Takayna, Emerging Artist Mentorship Program.
